Google SEO and Cancel.tel the search engine factor
While SEO isn’t really a concern for Cancel.tel as the site is intended to be a service, many people (including the developers at Telnic) do have some concern about the value of a .tel domain name in the Google search engine. The .tel page looks very basic and you can’t really write a lot on it so one could think it has a low value for SEO ranking and Google rankings in particular.
I bumped into this text written by one of the developers at Telnic who has his own .tel name henri.tel, Henri wrote the following:
Okay regarding SEO…
I thought someone mentioned 5 or 10 pages back if anyone could point at .tel domains being ranked at all in big searches.
Well I know a search for “henri” is stupid, but it’s pretty big (67 million hits on google.com, 45 million on google UK). My personal henri.tel is now #23 on google.com and #9 on Google UK.
Now I do have an advantage over you guys in that henri.tel has been out there longer, which shows how much value Google puts in the age of a domain/page and the domain name itself.
But it’s still fun to see henri.tel in there, along with Matisse, Becquerel and Cartier Bresson.
Ok spot 23 is good for a new site on Google so this made me curious about what Cancel.tel is doing so far (site still needs work but let us take a quick look) so I performed some searches on Google for keywords related to what the site is about. I was impressed about how strong the rankings are for many search terms related to the loss or theft of credit cards and even credit cards in particular. One example that I found interesting to note is the search for: Mastercard America what we see when doing a search for Mastercard America is that Cancel.tel, in particular the page where you can report the lost of theft of your Mastercard card is ranked right under the website of Mastercard, spot 2 out of Results 1 – 10 of about 26,700,000. So this ranking indicates that it is possible to rank high for certain keywords in the search engines with your .tel domain name if that is your intention.
The Mastercard America example is just one example, we noticed that for many searches Cancel.tel is ranking very high in Google, spots 20 to 30 out of millions of results. We didn’t undertake special SEO efforts to rank high, when you look what kind of sites that Cancel.tel outranks perhaps you could start to consider the importance of a .tel versus a .com domain name. Perhaps Google just likes .tel because of its nature. We don’t see the major task for Cancel.tel to rank high in Google, its main task is to be reached by mobile phones in a fast and direct way and function as a tool for people who need it.

Excellent article. I have started to notice myself .TEL showing up in many places on search engines.
I’m actually quite surprised by the strength this domain has been given by Google even though .TEL is only months old.
I have outlined a number of other things to consider when looking at this new .TEL technology.

I think this domain will be huge as I have already seen it being used in local print ads.
I do not wish to have Google as my search engine. I am happy with Yahoo and wish that you would switch me back as I did not request to have Google in the first place. Thank you for your support!
